COPTON - GEOLOGY & AREA ACTIVITY
In the Copton area drilling activity remains constant, with over 30 active operators, ranging from junior to senior players demonstrating the appeal of the stacked Cretaceous play in industry. Targets include a variety of zones, for both vertical and horizontal development.
The Copton region is located within the northern portion of the Alberta foothills, where historically conventional gas exploration has been considered geologically complex. Structural deformation has created a variety of traps, with hydrocarbon reservoirs enhanced by secondary porosity through natural fracturing. This area also lies ~25 km from the edge of the Deep Basin gas system edge, which is an immense wedge of abnormally-pressured, gas saturated, low permeability rock, with water saturations lower than 40%. Pay zones are typically tens of meters thick, and have been targeted historically with vertical and directional wells. At present, horizontal drilling with the application of multi-frac technology has commenced in the area with initial success.
Two main targets have been identified on the Copton lands, the Cardium and the Cadotte. The Cardium has both vertical and horizontal opportunities, with the Cadotte being targeted vertically. Other producing zones on Company lands include the Gething, Cadomin, Charlie Lake, and the Belloy.
